(In the abyssmal depth, air and sky - in the corpse, mountains and sea- in the ashes, wood and iron - in the earth, water and ether - in the heart of a Tankrik - the incluus of flower the anterior end of a grass - in the moveable and the immoveable - verily, in all the realms of the Ancient of Days - hath permeated, the holy breath of Nrusimha.)
Bijal Singha
Stone statue of Baijal Singh Dev,
builder of Nrusinghnath Temple.

NRUSINGHNATH is situated at a distance of 110 kms. from Bargarh , the Agro - Industrial - focus of  Western Orissa , Being a lone pilgrim spot , it has been appealing minds of Lakhs of people , with magical glitters, for the last so many centuries. This is the Dawning - place of mention of Lord Nrusinghnath, the presiding Deity of the sacred mount GANDHAMARDAN - endearing multitude of memories, surprisingly amalgamating the legends of the Ramayan, the Mahabharat, the Buddhist Era even reminiscent of Bhoj Raj, Santh Kabir and Tantracharya Nagarjuna (the preserver of all scriptures).

Far beyond the circuit of desperate cries and the shrieks of "alas - alas" - Gandhamadan stands unique with its heart flung open, towards the west of Bora Sambar Mountain. Like Simachal of Vishakha Pattanam and Nilachal of Puri, this is Gandhachal (Gandha + Ancha--=Gandha Mountain )of south Koshal , straching about 18 kms. Having its vast raw magnificence, experiencing no waxe and wane, with the cycle of seasons. The cascades, the wavering fountains, the cracks, the crevies and the boulders - altogether engender an exquisite panorrmic view. especially during every sunrise and sundown . It is , as if , the acosmic embraces the Cosmic.

In the Tretaya Yug ( The Silver Age) Jambavan ( the underring counseller of Ram) had suggested Vir Hanuman to bring bisalyakaraniere dawn , so that Laxman would rise back to life . It was in the middle of the war between Lord Ram and Ravan . Hanu failed to identify the particular herb and carried on his shoulders , a huge Himalayan mass . While flying above and proceeding towards Lanka (the Kingdom of Ravan ,) a portion dropped down . Gandhamardan is synonymous to that portion only.

Glowing tribute is paid by HIUEN T'SANG, the champion chinese traveller, who was attracted by the Scenic splendor of Gandhamardan, during his tour to Dakhin Koshal ( Part of Which is current Chhatishgarh of Madhya Pradesh and the bewitching colourful Zone of Western Orissa) He has spoken of the flowering Buddhist University of PARIMALGIRI ( po-lo-mo-lo-ki-li-) which has its campus on the picturesque Gandhamardan hills.
       There is a Sanskrit saying-

Not only the Orissan temples but in every part of this largest penninsula-Nrusimha is held in high esteem. He is described as the Fourth Incarnation of Vishnu (Killer of hirayan -Kashyipu and Saviour of Prahallad) in Sri Jai Dev's "Dasavatar" in the Tantric Literatures He has got many a names such Vir Nrusimha Ugra Nrusimha Asta Vahu Nrusimha Chatur Vahu Nrusimha Samhar Nrusimha jwalat Kapil Jata Nrusimha Urddhwasata Nrusimha Bhakta Palak Nrusimha Karunamarya Nrusimha Bhairav Nrusimha Bajranakha Nrusimha etc.

                       " UGRAM VIRAM MAHA VISHNUM
                          JWALANTO SARVATO MUKHAN
                         NRUSIMHAN VISHANAM VADRAM
                       MRUTYU  MRUTYUM NAMAMYAHAM"

( None, but Nrusimha the Great Being Whose face is, en toto,Flaming with fire -can save us from all Fears even from the summons of death.)

Accoding to the Ramopanishada, Nrusimha - worship is given top priority by the devotees of Lord Ram and Hanuman. In the Pancha - Mukhi Hanuman staba - Hanumana is blessed with the ferocious face of Nrusimha (KARALA NARASIMHAYA), out of his five faces. In the pen- picture of Sri Sarala Das (The Oriya Mahabharat, Gada Prva), Bheem has thought Sri Krishna as Nrusimha and he , himself has borne the face of Nrusimha , while killing Duhshasan . Sri Jagarnath Das , in his Srimad Bhagawat (Seven Chapter, Nrusimha Charit),has lauded 'NAMAIN NRUSIMHA CHARANA:. Nrusimha is truly , the jugular of all Vaishnavas. In the Epic - world , Adi Shankaracharya first introduced Nrusimha . But,since the reign of Ganga dynasty , Nrusimha - worship has become common in Orissa . By the time of Ramanujacharya, Laxmi - Nrusimha concept was already in the minds of the Oriyas.

In  the great  Jagannath culture , one can note a mysterious coincidence. Nrusimha- Tilak (the sectarian line on the fore- head)   is same as Jagannath -Tilak. This Tilka is Same in case of Ram ,even. The Nrusimha Sheela ( Rook) and the Nrusimha Shalagram ( Geode ) are worshipped near the Ratna Simhasan ( The loftiest seat of Jagannath) in Pure. One wonders knowing, the prasad ( Food) of Jagannath, dose not become Mahaprasad ( Sublime food) Save offering to Prahallad the dearly loved devotee of Nrusimha.

But this  monograph deals with Nrusimha of Gandhachal Here Vishnu is shrouded in mystery having head Cat-like and body lion-Like knows as the MARJARA -KESHARI or THE BIDALANRUSIMHA from. A glance at such wonder- breeding appearance, brings and the mystic phoenix of the Puranas of Greece.

Baba Jugadasa, in his all-times-to-be-referred "Nrusimha-Charitha-Maha Kavya", has sung the glory of Marjara-Keshari. According to the legends, when people were greatly tortured by Misuka daitya ( The Mouse Demon Incarnate), Vishnu mani-fested in his Feline From and ran to eat him away. Out of Severe panic, Musika concealed himself inside a tunnel. Since then, the Lord has been waiting ceremoniously, at the entrance. It is said that this tunnel went up to HariShankar, the Sister-Pilgrimage, lying on the other slope of Gandhamardan hills, in the adjacent Bolangir District.

In the Ramayan, we read about Guhyaka Sabar and in the Mahabharat, about Jara Sabara and Ekalavya. Who are they? Quite older than the Aryans and Dravidians , these Sabara have contributed a lot to the eternal dazzle of saints and philosophers have praised , including Hafiz, Max Muller, Sopenheur, Gette, E.M.Forster, Sri Ma, Siter Nivedita, Annie Vasant , Martha Root, Ruhiyiih Rabbani-even , the spiritual luminaries like hoghi Effendi and Abdul- Baha (the Mystery of god.)

These Sabara, according to the historians, were once inhabiting in a belt , streching from Ganga Sagar in the East to Chhotnagpur in the west and from Vindhya Mountains in the North to the margins of River Krishna in the South .Pivoting around Biswavasu (the Sabara King ), the rich fabric of Jagarnath history is also inter - woven. These Sabara are regarded as Adivasis or Tribes- men , at present . They are the aboriginal species of any country ,   like the Aainus of Japan and the Maoris of New Zealand. In India, they include Bondas, Parajas, Souras, Orang, Bhunjiyas, Prahariyas, and Kandhs etc. ( only 62 tribes existing in Orissa) Orissa is so-say,a Tribal-State and this tribal kind has its own irrefutable identity.

Some six hundred Years back, JAMUNA KANDHUNI (A Kandh-Tribal lady,as pious as Lalita, the daughter of Biswavasu), hada beautifull dream. Lord Nrusimhanath appeared before her in His Wonderous form. The Glorious Halo hanged over her innocent existence and she completely enthralled. Waking at day break, she narrated every thing to Hari, her husband. Hari however, advised her to be grateful. Acting upon divine bid dings, both went to the Jungle in search of Sweet yam Pithakanta(Diascorea Bulbfera) (A tuber crop , yet plentily available in the Gandhamardan). While combing the earth, they found the same dream -Idol. How Could Jamuna's dreaming is futile? It was an oasis which offended the phenomenon of total internal reflection. With hearts yielded to the Lord, both husband and wife continued worshipping.

After some years Jamuna and Hari met with BAIJALDEV, the king of Patnagarh, who was a Tan ilk-Vishnu. He has also seen Nrusimhanath is a dream, Just as king Indradyamna  of Malab has seen neela ( Jagannath) from the neelachal considering it a bountiful favor Baijal Dev laid the found ation of the Current temple on March 17.1413 A.D.It was Saturday, as vividly observed from the Oriya and Devnagari inscriptions.

I.e./Suvarna Kshyaya Puri ( Adjcent Modern Sonepur), Marjara Keshari Nrusimhanath and the river Chitrotpala, are the three holy places of South Koshal.

One can see Baijal Dev, entreating at the Exalted Threshold, as if bound in a contract to remain at the wake of His call, for ever and ever and a day.

From the Indian Archaeological journals it is noted that MR.J.D.Beglar, the illustrious British his torian had a visit to the temple of   Nrusinganath in the fourth Quarter of 19th century. He has mentioned about this monument, being built most conspicuously in the Khajuraho's  styles.Another historian of report. Mr,B,R,BHANDARKAR has spoken of this Monument, being coeval to the globally - famous Sun-Temple of Konark. Besides a broad-spectrum of views these two views aware us that this monument has never been raised out of idle fancies and vain imaginings. While entering inside the inner-sanctum, one see the rock statues of Nav Grahas( the Nine planets of Astrology) in a line. The other beautiful rock sculptures in clude the statues of Ganga, Jamuna,Nandi,Jaya-Vijaya,Trivikrama. and three conspicuous Manifestation,i.e.Bamana,Baraha and Samhar Nrusimha. The eight-handed Ganesh and the Cow-herd Sahadev are not inserted images. Rather, they are carved on the embedded prototypes, nearNavDurga. The original Idol of Nrusimhanath is also kept, here.

No one knows, from when the statue of Jagannath came to the Temple. However, once in a year, here Lord Jagannath appears openly with his elder brother Balabhadra and sister Subhadra. This is quite in unison, with the famous Rath Yatra   (The Car Festival) of Puri and in fact of the parallel event of some 40 countries of the Orient and the Occident. The Garuda Stambha confronts the seat of Nrusimhanath where devotees lit candles, during Deepavali ( The Festival of Light ) Dakhin Kali is worshipped on a hill top,about,100mt. above the main temple. A narrow way is leading there, just at the entrance of the tunnel which has been closed with cement,Years ago.

At the very first sight while entering inside the Temple premises, the simhadwar ( Portal) fascinates with the statue of Sri Ganesh at the top. On both sides of the portal, a couple of watchful Lions with Radha-krishna and Laxmi Narayana, are seen .At its interior side statues of Hanuman,Kartik and Shiv-Parvati are seen along with dancers and drummers. A mini-temple of PanchaDevata( the five dei ties) and another mini-Giri Gobardhan temple, reminding of teen-ager Krishna, also unique religious mania.

The temple of Nrusimhanath, is certainly not "Konark-a poetry in stone" of a rabindraNath Tagore. It is certainly not" A rapsody of marble" of south Delhi, raised by a Fariburh shaba. It is not ever architecturally so marvellous,a monument but the all in one effect of this place -i.e.Folk Tales folk Lores Legends History, Archaeology, sculputure,Gifts of nature plus the Divine Secrets, feel

of truth, umpteen.that the difficult, indeed, to be substantiated

The main perennial flow of Gandhamardan is PAPAHARINI, literally meaning, the destroyer of sin. it is symbolic of Sanatana -the Continuum of past, present and future. flowing out of the confluence of seven fountains, called SAPTADHAR - IT HAS AN AVARAGE WIDTH OF 12FT.No man-made tributary can flow into it. Nothing can pollute and adulterate it. Running about 25 Kms. It has touched the Anga Tributary and Finally embraud river Mahanadi, the longestion Orissa des cribed as" Manada" in the book of PTOLEMY ( Second Century A.D.) and believed as the Ganga of Kali Yug ( The Iron Age)

Papaharini carries with it, a great deal of sanctity. Here Shankaracharya's Ganga-Stotra, Comes to mind-

( O Goddess Ganga it is Better to be a tortoise or fish in your water to be a small chameleon on your bank to be born far away from you.)

Shankar, also echoed the Valmikian sentiments of Ganga-Shankar

" i would rather be a bull, house, serpent or elephant near you, rather than be a king far away from you"

The holy Papaharini is referred to be the river of salvation by the people of Chhatishgarh ( the seven southern districts of Madhay Pardesh , such as Bastar , Raipur, Raigarh,Durg,Ganga sarovur. Hance the allusion "CHHITISH GARH KA GANGA"One can spend hours in contemplation, Siting on a rock or under a tree, by her side. Peopleare forbidden to catch fishes in Papaharini. This is mandatory.

The Cradle of papaharini is SATYAAM the legendary Mango-Tree flared up in the Mahabharat. In the Dwapara Yug ( The Copper Age) The five Pandav Brother;s had entered in to theGandhanmardan, during their secret -dwelling .once Bhima the bulky -warrior felt hungry in his genes .To one's utteramazement, a mango-stone sprouted , turned into big tree laden with fruits and is said to have satiated his hunger. At present thereare several m,ango-trees, growing here and there, at the Satyaam site. thereis a plan of raising more mangosein terraces.

Via satyaam as one goes from Nrusimhanath to Harishankar an old-patter end cave is caught in sight It is just 10.5kms away from the main temple having dimension of 150 ft. lenght 50 ft.breadth 25ft.depth.This mighty structure resembles like that of a typical Buddhist cave and prompts us recall the description of a Buddha vibhar by Hiune t'sang one can find the ruins on the Plateau. Very recently this BHEEM MANDAP (where Bheem used to go into deep slumber) inspired the local people to dig out earth at several Places and as heavenlier-outpouring would have it,many a broken image and related rocks were found at Ganipali, ahamlet, lying 50 kms away from the foot-hills of Gandhamardan. Especially a par of MUCHALINDA BUDDHA image (Buddha under a serpent hood) was found. This image is quite older than the image of 6th century A.D which is very rare in the Indian Sub-continent. Dhangirisila and sain Bahal are other two plaes , reminescing of Buddhist culture.Gandhamardan ,is believed to be dating back to the period of Indrabhuti ( the ruler of the region), the teacher- propounder of Vajrayana Buddhism.

Here, one point may be noted. No snakes or wild animals have ever attacked any devotee, passing along this Mandap. Those ignited at heart, ought not fan any doubt.

There runs a folk-tale in remembrance of Sita. Once she concealed her ring in a font of 2ft. diameter and in no time, Ram saw it in his divine eye and restored back. That is the current SITAKUND from wherecrystal-clear-cold water is gushing out and being Channelised through pipe-lines.its holy water is belived to save the adulterous once. All reasonings dissolve where belief does dominnate.

On Nrusimha Chaturdashi,i.e. on the fourteenth day of the brightfort-night of the month of Baishakh (May-June) the holy birth-day of lord Nrusimhanath is celebrated with great pomp and grandeur. This day, the Lord appears in the plentitude of his glory. A great many devotees take to austere vow (Nrusimha Brata). In the Srimad Bhagawat Sri Jagannath Das has described of the significance of this Brata that Brahma had observed ere Creation and Shiv, too, Killing Tripurasura.

When the maximum temperature of Orissa rices upto 440 C, the Gandhamardan surrounding is very pleasnt and comfortable during this time.Lakhs of devotees congregate here and this unique congregation is called BAISHAKHA MELA. Shaktas, Shaivas Vaishnavas, Ganapatyas, Souras,Koumaras in fact, worshippers from several cross sections are present here, divorced from the graft and taint of a World constantly changing names and forms.

Like the to grand Adivasi Melas of Kanker ( Bastar) and Rajim ( Raipur) one can see in Baishakha Mela, innumerable faces of Adivasi, adding to its art and lustre . So many Adivasis are not even seen in any of the Western Orissan Festivals Such as the Global Dhanu Festival of Bargarh of the famous  Sheetal Shasthi assemblage of sambalpur or the Spring-tide Car Festival of shyam Bihariji of Bhatli or the Jagar Gathering of Huma ( widely world, besides the leaning tower pf Pisa). Cynosoure of Baishakhi Mela is its rare herbal exhibits. It  an AYURVEDIST's PARADISE.

GOKUND GHAT lies along the Papaharni, towards the South-West direction of the main temple. It is the real side of Baishakhi Mela, being sancitified wth the presence of Shiv the Lord of benedection. Not only in about two hundred special temples and complementary places of worship of Nrusimha in India ,but no where in the world, such a significant site is seen .The devotees greatly remember the cow -kind here Evan a particular rock, here ,neath the flowing water, appears like the cow-mask, when seen with concentration.

We are scents of the Aryans, acknowledging the helps and manifold sacrifices of the cow and eulogized her as "Mother" in prayer-

Cows have been considered as blessing of the Celestial concourse-from-on High Her divinity is revealed in another powerful verse-

( Say : she has borne the thirty three crores  of deities in her body-Brahma, on her back-Vishnu on her neck and on her mouth and what not)

Thus goes the most precious legend of this monograph. Once while Lord Shiv was taking bath in Kshira Sagar ( The Ocean of Milk) a certain cow ate away the Kushas ( Botanically nomenclated as cynodon dactylon) which He kept for worship. It enrahed Him to the extent of Go-Haran ( Cow stealing) and Go-hatya ( Cow slaughter)-regarded as mahaPatak( The heinous offence)Then, the Lord went on wandering to my riad of holy places for atone ment.Quite non-plussed and woe-betided, He reachedGandhamardan, in the long last and found at Gokund ghat-the Ark of salvation where he performed samskaras ( Proclivities) This is the last resort out of regardlessness, dony any sort of injury to the cow-kind at any time, under any circmustances- find this Ghat befitting oblations and varied sacrifices according to the Vedic rites.

The terminal portion of papaharini is BINJHAI GHAT which lie down the main tample, at a distance of 200 ft.Here Vindaya Vasini is worshipped in a beautiful temple, on the hill top.

(Praise is to Mother Durga-the Killer of Mahisasura the Dweller of the blessed Vindhay-Mountains. She is, verily the life-vein of Vishnu. May her laughter-bloom entwine us)

She is regarded as the Point of Adoration of the Binjhal Tribes-men. In the month of Ashwina ( september-october) o the culmination day of Dashara, the swords the tridents-the spears etc. (?) of all the goddesses of Nrusimhanath temple are carried by the devotees,to this temple of Vindhya Vasini. at the dead part of night, the entire atmosphere gets reverberrated with the beating of Nishan (A typical iron-framed instrument), reminding of the tribal-drummers (bajanias) of the Nishan Devi Temple, sound, the hair of the body do stand stright, aginst one's wishes.

In between Binjhai Ghat and Gokund ghat-there lies the tample of SAMALESWARI (Goddess SAMALAI),The Apple of the courgeous eyes of Surendra Sai (A great son of Mother India, before and after Sepoy Mutiny of 1857, Behind Samalai Temple, at present, the SRIRAM TEMPLE is under construction and behind the Shiv tample of Gokund ghat a temple in memory of Jamuna kundhani ( THE BEAUTIFUL DREAMERESS) is under construction.

As one goes up-stream, KABIR MANDAP is caught in sight before the Garuda Stamba. The ardent Follower of Santh Garuda Stamba  ,there appears a house of worship.50ft. ahead Garuda Stamba  ere appears GANPATI GHAT where the devotees take carzy bath, with the assurance of immoratality. About 45ft above this Ghat, the SHIV LINGA ( Black stone) is inserted. Devotees take waters for 108 times and offer on it. Sight of such an arduous worship, along a rock slope, is really soulelevating.

Then comes a 10ft high water-fall, known CHALDHAR. Taking a bath here,is indicative of bestowal of underreamt-of peace and prosperity.

Then Comes BHEEMDHAR, a 20ft high water-fall, lying at a distance of 50ft, from sitakund. Here the emblem of Bheem's feet are seen.GADADHAR succeeds Bheem Harwich has been created out of the strokes of Bheem's Gada ( the Club).

TRIDEV GHAT is a prominent punctuation of Papaharini cofronting Sita-kund.It is sanctified  with the presence of Brahma. ( The Generator). Vishnu ( The Operator) and Maheshwar ( the Destroyer) They are the Supreme-triad of Hindu-Pantheon. Sri Ganesh is also present here, counted as the Primal Point of all Hindu-worships.

Opposite to Tridev Ghat, there lies the PANCHUPANDAV GHAT, where rock statues of Yudhistir, Bheem ,Arjun,Nakul and Sahadev are worshipped .Above Panchu Pandav Ghat, the devo tees crowd in the Vicinityof  PITRU PINDA GHAT,where Pindas (Food in balls to appease the dead) are offered, especially to the past three generatinos and the living three generation are fed. Thus six generations are connected with the devotee himself, being the seventh. The seven (Lukas) (World)  are ritually traversed, Which one chants in the holy GAYATRIMANTRA  of the VEDAMATA, i.e.Bhur, Bhuvar,Svar, Maha, Jana, Tapasand Satya. These seven Worlds have been interpreted differently in the sacred writs as, The seven Cities, The Seven Valleys, The Seven Rivers, The Seven Heavens. The Seven Mountains and the like.

Confronting Pitru pinda Ghat is there the KAKAKUND, a narrow tunnel, where bones and pyres of the deceased are inserted.

Above Pitru pinda Ghat, while one approaches towards Satyaam a fight of artificial steps (For the relaxation on the tourists) hold attention. Believed that, here was the as yam of Kapil Rishi, the great Propounder of Samkhya darsan ( The Philosophy of Numerology, Such as Zero-belling Symbolic of saguna-the recurring manifestations with the concept of a perfect digit and its multiple) the asylum-site is a semi-circular water fall of 35ft high known as KAPIL DHAR. Its water is nascently nourished with a great many rare medicinal herbs, thereby tasting mildly acidic and is guarantee of health and healing.

Truth, itself, rivals, any spot of Gandhamardan. Every spot is suitable for picnic and film-shooting purpose. People espe-cillay the College students flock here from different part of Orissa and outside such asChattsgarh. Bihar West Bengal,Andhra Pradesh, Tamilnadu etc.

GUPTESWAR-MAHADEV is a side of clam and Seranity lying 2kms away up-hills. Its is the union of a couple of streamlets, called BHALUCHHERA and GUPTA-symbolic of the Ganga and the Jamuna. Here, erection of the temple of SIDDHESWAR (the Lord of Mt.Kailash0has been tenatively fixed.

Another spot DURGEI KHOL is laying 6kms.away up hills. The Place is also silently eloquent of the majesty of nature. Here during Dashahara, as the worship of Goddess Durga goes on with rythmic drum-beatings and buffalo is conventionlly sacrificed water gushes out from the dry bed of the streamlet, so spontaneous in viating the Lawsof Mechanics (?) If there was ever a thing of beauty, It is Nrusimhanath and its periphery!

From Jamuna and Hari ( The Kandhas), the responsibility of Lord;s Worship had been handed over to Baijal dev and his noble descendants. From 1910 to 1932, Lal Rajendra Singh Bariha, the Zamindar of Raj Bora Sambar the custodian. For another 19 Years, members of certain Panda dynasty were incharge. But in 1952,the State Endowment Department of Orissa risked oppertunity. Since then an efficient TEMPLE MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE has been motoring ahead. In fulfilling all onerous obligations. Still then a thorough finding on the march of the Lord-Worship is necessary.

It is imperative that the Braham Charis (Teen-ager celibates) must worship the Lord, where Nrusimha Sheela and Nrusimha  Shalagram are present. Here, in the temple of Bidala Narasimha, a couple of teen-ager Brahmins has been worshipping for long. Teen-age is therefore, regarded as a pricless boon. But in case of deviation of worship, it is believed, let any mishap should befall. When one of the worshippers just happens to cross his teens, another is chosen, in substitute.

(Supplications before Sri Nrusimha, the Vouchsafer of rays of wisdom-Whose countenance is, verily, the pedestal of Brahma and heart, the abode of Laxmi).

at every noon-tide and even-tide,all the devotees, present inside the temple premise, get spiritually quickened of tasting the Prasad ( total vegetarian food) of Lord Nrusimhanath called HARIHARA PANGAT.This Prasad is freely distributed. The foreigners are greatly welcome, unlike many temples of India. One earns that superanl feeling barely needed for a world experiencing in season and of season, a democratic religious fermentation come in the presence of Sri Jagannath, of course, Hari Hara Pangat, whispers of its animating power, in the breasts of the country gentry and Peasantry.

Besides being a home of more than 5000 rare medicinal herbs ( some hitherto-unidentified), providing medicines for fatal diseases like cancer-tuberculosis-Leposy-filaria-epilepsy-asthma-kidney and liver dysfunctions ,even AIDS Gandhamardan serves as a Sanctuary for a wide variety of animals such as leopards-black panthers-elks-wild boars-wild cats-civet-cats rabbits-deers-a-number of merrily chirping birds and types of monkeys ( specially the species with milk-white bodies & red faces ). Recently, the plans to exhaust Bauxite-ores from the womb of Gandhamardan have been thwarted by the rising groups of social activists, journalists and the religious-public at large.

It is no denying the fact that Gandhamardan is crystallized at a place, silently donating its portions towards balancing the GLOBAL ECCLOGICAL PYRAMID-as if paying for the grievous mistakes of an industry-monger civilization, lamentably insouciant of the VISION OF A GREEN ERATH !

CROW-AN OUT OF QUESTION..................!

In the Ramyan,it has been said that once, when Sita was taking bath, the son of Indra ( the Lord of rain) came in the guise of a crow and had his sensuous eyes frozen on her body, brimming with beauty and vivaciousness. Understanding such evil intention, Lord Ram heaped upon the crow, a curse to be abberrative of sight, since than the ravenous crows have been endowed with a slant-sight and have been counted as a bed omen. It is well proven that a crow does lay eggs in the nest of Koel (The Indian Nightingale). The innocent Koel, howbeit, fails to distinguish the eggs. Immediately after hatching, the ungrateful crow leaves the nest; it is indeed a grave mischief. How ever the crows have been debarred from fluttering over the Gandhamardan sky, as thought of a kind of due punishment. But it is surprising to note that they are seen at near by Paikmal market and the Borasambar hill.

The Temple Management Committee has been holding and arranging spiritual discourses and conference, for the last four decades. All sacred-thread-Ceremonies, Marriages-ceremonies, Hair-drop ceremonies of children etc, are conducted, at its behest.

Three DHARMASHALAS (rest Houses) have been built by the humble devotees, besides a PANTHA NIVAS (Tourists' Resorts),set up by the Orissa Tourism Development Corporation.

It is by the initiative of the local people that an AYURVEDIC COLLEGE- CUM -HOSPITAL has been founded, serving the dual purpose of research and training. Hundreds of patients do frequent here, around the year, for the sake of low-cost-treatment.

The soul deep beauty of Gandhamarda inspired Miss Parvati Giri (one of the awakened-handmaidens of Gandhiji), to set of a MATRU NIKETAN here, for the adoption and rearing of Orphan-girls.

Recently a SEVASHRAM has been established by the State Tribal and Rural Welfare Department of Orissa, in order to promote the cause of basic education.

A SANSKRIT TOLL has been running, to promote the cause of Sanskrit learning.

The social-Forestry Department has raised an ideal NURSERY.toconverse and propagate the GANDHAMARDAN FLORA. At present programmes are being made to raise few lusy non-formal gardens, espically the rock gardens the pyramidal garden. Nrusimhanath is so-to-say a socio economic complex.

4kms away at Paikmal now a HIGH SCHOOL is under construction dedicated to Jamuna kundhani .

The weekly market of Paikmal is also exemplary of the transactions of herbal medicines, facilitating exchanges of ideas, attitudes, aptitudes skills the under standing of native and outside quacks. Gandhamardan has trained many an exceptional Tribes men, in the method of parent-treatment, from generation to generation and shall continue to inspire the succeeding generation, too.
